Philippe Séclier

Atlas Tadao Ando

Philippe Séclier has documented for over nine years the private and public constructions of Tadao Ando in Japan and throughout the world. This publication invites the reader to follow the photographer’s quest and gathers in the form of an atlas 2300 B&W images from a selection of over 120 buildings including both iconic and confidential ones.

In an unprecedented approach and following a rigorous serial process, the plates allow us to perceive, beyond the glass and concrete envelopes, the outstandingly contemplative aspect and artistic power of the famous architect body of work. This atlas of shapes reveals the plays of echoes and spatial resonances between each building, offering an original view to grasp his architecture.

Philippe Séclier shares his quest with short texts as well throughout the book. An essay by architecture critic Yann Nussaume sheds light on the different facets of the photographer’s approach. At the end of the book, a complete illustrated bibliography documents the breadth of Tadao Ando’s oeuvre.
