This book marks the culmination of Matt Black's long-term series, started in 2013. The Magnum photographer has traveled the United States, over nearly 160,000 km, drawing up an uncompromising inventory of America today by focusing more particularly on these peripheral cities and the precariousness of everyday life through powerful and meticulously composed B&W images.
What started as a story about isolated communities has over the years become the portrait of an increasingly divided country where inequalities and disparities are growing. Completed in 2020, after the visit to the last state, this series is accompanied by the artist's travel diary, which combines his personal notes and collections of found objects.
