André Magninhas been an independent curator since 1978. He began his research into contemporary art in non-Western cultures in 1986, focusing particularly on all of Sub-Saharan Africa, for the exhibition “Magiciens de la Terre” at the Centre Georges-Pompidou and the Grande Halle de la Villette, for which he was assistant curator. Since 1989, he has constituted the emblematic Pigozzi Collection, which he has directed for twenty years.
He has published several books on contemporary African art, such as Art of Africa (Harry N. Abrams, Thames & Hudson), L’Art africain contemporain (Scala), and monographs such as Seydou Keïta (Scalo), Malick Sidibé (Scalo), Chéri Samba (Actes Sud), and J.D Okhai Ojeikere (Actes Sud). André Magnin has produced retrospective exhibitions “Frédéric Bruly Bouabré” in Germany (Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin, Suermondt-Ludwig museum in Aachen, Portikus in Frankfurt-am-Main), in Switzerland (Kunsthalle in Bern), and in the United States (“Worlds Envisioned: Alighiero e Boetti and Frédéric Bruly Bouabré” at the DIA Center for the Arts, New York) and in Great Britain (Ikon Gallery in Birmingham).
In 2009, he founded MAGNIN-A, whose mission is to promote contemporary African art on the international art market.
