Ishiuchi Miyako

Born in 1947, Ishiuchi Miyako taught herself in her darkroom, in a Japanese photography scene that was at the time overwhelmingly male-dominated. As the first woman to win the Kimura Ihei Prize, she organized one of the first group exhibitions of women photographers in Japan, “Hyakka-Ryō-Ran,” in 1976, paving the way for an entire generation. She went on to receive the Japan Photographic Society Award (2006), the Hasselblad Award (2014), and the Women in Motion Award at the Rencontres d’Arles in 2024, and represented Japan at the Venice Biennale in 2005. Her photographs are held in the collections of MoMA in New York, the Kunsthaus in Zurich, the Tate in London, and the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo.
