Sebastião Salgado was born in Brazil in 1944 and began
his career as a photographer in Paris in 1973. He worked with
various agencies until 1994 when he founded "Amazonas images",
an organization entirely dedicated to his work, with his wife
Lélia Wanick Salgado. Thereafter, he began various long-term
projects that have led to major exhibitions and publications
conceived by Lélia, including "Workers" (1993), "Exodus" (2000),
"Genesis" (2013), and "Amazônia" (2021). In 1998, the couple founded
the Instituto Terra promoting reforestation and environmental
education in the valley of the Rio Doce, a river traversing
the states of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo. Today, thanks to
the Instituto Terra, a forest of widely varied endemic flora and
fauna is to be found there.
