Born in Aubonne (Switzerland) in 1981, Matthieu Gafsou lives and works in Lausanne. After studying photography at the School of applied arts in Vevey, his diploma work, Surfaces, rapidly gained critical attention in Switzerland and abroad (HSBC Foundation for Photography Prize in 2009, Photoforum Pasquart Prize in 2008).
In 2014, Matthieu Gafsou exhibited Only God Can Judge Me at the Musée de l'Elysée, the result of an immersion in the world of drug users in Lausanne. From 2015 until 2018, Matthieu Gafsou's H+ series explores the relationship between the human body and technology. This project was successfully shown at the Rencontres de la photographie in Arles in 2018, then in China as part of the Jimei X Arles international photo festival. In 2022, the Vivants project was presented at the Pully Museum in Switzerland, as well as at Paris Photo where Gafsou won the Ruinart photography prize. The series has also been presented in 2023 at the Hangar art center in Brussels as part of the Echoes of Tomorrow exhibition.
In parallel with his artistic practice, Matthieu Gafsou teaches at the Haute École d'art et de design of Lausanne (ECAL). He is represented by Galerie C at Neuchâtel and Paris.
