Franck Sorbier

Franck Sorbier is one of the rare designers in the world of haute couture with a reputation for perfectionism and elitism, and his rise to fame was vertiginous. Success has followed his endeavours, starting with his first prêt-à-porter collection in 1987. His highly poetic and personal world mainly found followers in the United States and Japan. Even today, each new collection demonstrates his non-conformity. At the Théâtre Antoine in 2012, his collection went beyond a basic interest in fabrics and textures, by integrating light. “My catwalks have this particularity of truly being live ‘tableaux’, journeys in time and through cultures.”

Born in 1961, Sorbier studied fashion design and model-making at the ESMOD, in Paris, where he obained the Special Jury Prize. After starting out with Chantal Thomass and Thierry Mugler, he made a name for himself with the creation of the famous boldero made from ribbons, for the DIM campaign, an icon of the 1990s. In 1994, the House of Cartier asked him to presents its Autumn/Winter collection 1995-1996 at the Carrousel du Louvre. Five years later, his first haute couture collection took to the catwalk. Since then, his work has been regularly shown and his designs have travelled the length and breadth of the fashion world.

Franck Sorbier is also interested in the creation of costumes for the stage: he designed those of La Traviata, in 2005, for Open-Air Operas, as well as Mylène Farmer’s costumes for her 2006 tour. He regularly works in collaboration with his partner, Isabelle Tartière, who is also the financial director of his house of couture.
