Philippe Séclier

Freighters of major international ports, Italy in the footsteps of Pasolini or America as seen by Robert Frank... The photographs and films of Philippe Séclier are all marked by travel and wandering. Movement is omnipresent: it is as much his theme of predilection as it is his working method. From his first series as a freelance photographer, he has travelled across the globe to photograph ports and freighters, sites and symbols of departure. These images were published in Hôtel Puerto, in 2001, a book accompanied by texts by Jean Rolin, Alvaro Mutis, José Manuel Fajardo and Michel Le Bris. In the same year, Philippe Séclier roamed the Italian coastline for two months, in the footsteps of Pasolini. Through previously unpublished documents, letters, manuscripts and his own photographs, he offers us the experience of a unique voyage in Pier Paolo Pasolini, la longue route de sable (2005). Constantly on the move, he retraced Robert Frank’s route, the author of the famous book Les Américains (1958). A twenty-thousand kilometre odyssey across the United States, his film Un voyage américain (2009) rediscovers the spirit of the Beat generation and Frank’s impact on the world of art, publishing and American culture.

Born in 1958, Philippe Séclier became a photographer and director after a long career in the written press, namely as assistant editor-in-chief at Parisien-Aujourd’hui en France. Winner of the Thomas Cook Prize for his work on Pasolini, his photos have given rise to many exhibitions in France and abroad.
