Ludovic Carème

French photographer Ludovic Carème received his training in photography at the ETPA School in Toulouse and published his first photograph in the newspaper Libération in 1995. Following the impetus of Jean Hatzfeld, he portrayed refugees’ couples that escaped from Srebrenica. This experience will be crucial in confirming the urgency for Carème to testify of the injustice and fragility of human beings with his Rolleiflex 6x6 or Hasselblad. He then portrayed illegal immigrants from Mali in hunger strike at the Saint-Bernard church in Paris as well as Haitian slaves in the sugar plantations in Haiti.

In 2007, Carème moves to São Paulo and dedicate himself to documentary photography. For over two years, he photographs its inhabitants and their drift, empty buildings resulting from real estate speculation and the consequences with homeless people. He has also traced back the origins of one of São Paulo’s large community of inhabitants, going up the Amazon river to encounter natives working in plantations of rubber tree and document their daily life.
