Anouck Durand

Amitié Éternelle

This photo novel, developed from previously unseen archives, reads like a comic book. Anouck Durand astutely intertwines personal and historical narratives, the friendship between communist China and Albania in the 1970’s and the story of an unfailing friendship between two men, one that became the first Albanian "Righteous Among the Nations" to have saved his friend from the antisemitic persecutions during the Second World War.

This true story is particularly compelling with its original layout combining text, photographic archives, press clippings, letters, propaganda posters, excerpts from political speeches, etc. It is from their research since 2008 on photography in Albania during the communist regime that Anouck Durand, with anthropologist Gilles de Rapper, have heard about this personal story. At the end of the photo novel, a short text reveals the context of this research.
