Charlotte Mano at Galerie XII

Galerie XII Paris presents Ravissements, Charlotte Mano's first solo exhibition. The ambivalence of the title hints at the watered-down, contemplative, almost nostalgic atmosphere so characteristic of the artist's work.

The exhibition presents a series of works from different series in which Charlotte Mano has never ceased to question the image, its power of representation and its own limits. While she presented pictorialist portraits in the series ‘Portraire’ (2016-2017), which made her famous, the artist will experiment tirelessly thereafter, challenging the image and its forms in order to make her photography disturbing.

Thus, she tries to make the memory of her childhood places survive by flying a sheet in landscapes that end up disappearing (‘Linceul’, 2016), she hunts ghosts by photographing her subjects in the dark, playing with the pixels of her camera (‘Muses’, 2017) or even tracks down her family by chasing them at night with her torch (‘Nocturnes’, 2017).

For her new series ‘Mythologies’ (2022), the first pieces of which are presented in the exhibition, guided by the light of the full moon, she delivers images of a strange thickness revealing a state of ecstasy and return to oneself that calls for calm.

These new works seem to be refuge images that allow her to materialise the unspeakable but also to offer each of us the possibility of questioning what makes our personal destiny and that of the world.

In 2020, Charlotte Mano received the HSBC Prize for her series Thank You Mum published by Atelier EXB. This time, no more veils, no more night, no more artefacts, but a mother-daughter resistance duo whose outcome is known in advance: the mother's death. Charlotte accompanies her mother in her illness, in the hardest moments when the body gives up and

and no longer responds to anything. A new union has been found with the one who matters most to her, a close bond that is played out beyond all presuppositions.

In a most disturbing face-to-face encounter, the little rituals and the daily staging of events will be part of the path to exorcising the pain.
