Frank Horvat at Château de Tours

The Jeu de Paume pays tribute to the photographer Frank Horvat with the exhibition Frank Horvat 50-65, which offers a renewed vision of his first fifteen years of career, revealing the richness and singularity of a complex and multifaceted oeuvre.

Based on 175 prints and 55 documents from the period (publications, writings, books and contact sheets) left by the photographer in his home studio in Boulogne-Billancourt, the exhibition is divided into seven parts, allowing us to follow and explain the photographer's approach in the context of the evolution of the illustrated press of the time.

The fascination for beauty, the motif of the play of the eye, the attention to physical or amorous disturbance are some of the recurring themes represented and draw an intimate cartography of this photographer driven throughout his life by an introspective research and by an inexhaustible quest for new experience.

In connection with the exhibition, the Atelier EXB has published Side Walk in 2020, a personal series, made between 1982 and 1986 in New York, which he developed in parallel with his commissions and which was decisive in his transition to colour and auteur projects.
