Bettina at Rencontres of Arles

The Rencontres of Arles present the first exhibition in Europe devoted to Bettina Grossman, the legendary New York artist of the 1960s and 1970s, better known as Bettina.

An eccentric personality totally dedicated to her art, Bettina lived in the legendary Chelsea Hotel from 1972 until her death, following the fire in her studio in which she lost all her archives. Living like a recluse in this community of artists, she produced and accumulated in her studio a considerable and major body of work that is part of the great history of the artistic avant-gardes of the 20th century.

The exhibition Bettina, poème du renouvellement permanentoffers a unique insight into her research into photographic, sculptural and graphic form.

On the occasion of this exhibition, the Atelier EXB and the Rencontres of Arles are publishing Bettina, the first monographic book to present her exceptional photographic, cinematographic and graphic research work, nourished by the practice of conceptual sculpture.

This book is the winner of the 6th edition of the LUMA Rencontres Dummy Book Award Arles 2020.

It was also supported by Women In Motion, a Kering program to highlight the place of women in the arts and culture, as part of its LAB.
