Alexis Cordesse in Reggio Emilia

Produced by the Fondazione Palazzo Magnani, the Fotografia Europea festival held in Reggio Emilia, Italy, from April 29 to June 12, hosts twenty-two exhibitions in ten venues in the historic center of Emilia-Romagna city. Stories and narratives that aim to stimulate new points of view and a global reflection on the complexity of the world. In particular, at the Cloister of San Pietro, Alexis Cordesse will be present with his work published at the Atelier EXB in October 2021: Talashi. Seeking an alternative to the sentimental dramatizations of war as they are too often broadcast by the mainstream media, Alexis Cordesse signs an act of collective memory by gathering personal photographs belonging to those living in exile in Turkey, Germany and France, between 2018 and 2020. Like their owners, these artifacts have survived perilous journeys. Through his encounters, Alexis Cordesse has written the stories of these vernacular documents and of those who entrusted them to him. At the crossroads of intimacy and history, they allow us to imagine with empathy the daily life in Syria and in exile of ordinary people, turned upside down by extraordinary events. The combination of words and images gives the impression of a broken puzzle, reconstituted but with some pieces missing.
