Judith Joy Ross exhibition

LE BAL presents the exhibition Judith Joy Ross - Photographies 1978-2015, a large retrospective dedicated to a major figure in American photographic portraiture.

Since the mid-1970s, Judith Joy Ross has been immortalizing brief encounters. Her widely underestimated approach to subject matter reveals an infinite delicacy and a deep interest in the everyday life.  Indeed, the artist knows how to put aside her own prejudices in order to get as close as possible to the person she is photographing and thus reveal their vulnerability and therefore their humanity. Most often produced as part of a series motivated by moral, civic or existential matters, her portraits depict silent exchanges between intimacy and emotional distance.

Judith Joy Ross – Photographies 1978-2015 is the first monograph in French dedicated to the artist, copublished by Atelier EXB, Fundación MAPFRE and LE BAL. This book renews the view of her work by presenting both major images and others taken from her personal and unpublished archives. This publication reveals to the reader the singularity of the photographer who paints an unpretentious picture of American society through the individuals she meets. It is accompanied by essays by art historian Svetlana Alpers and curator Joshua Chuang.
