Graciela Iturbide exhibition

Following on from previous programs dedicated to great photographers from Latin America, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain presents the exhibition Heliotropo 37 by the Mexican Graciela Iturbide.

Often associated with magical realism, the artist will say that she prefers the idea of a «dose of poetry and imagination» that pushes documentary interpretation further and finds in travels around the world the opportunity to know and to be surprised. Graciela Iturbide creates images that have oscillated between a documentary approach and a poetic look for more than 50 years.

This first major exhibition in France devoted to her full work from 1970 to the present day shows more than 200 images from her most iconic works to her most recent photographs, to which is added an unpublished colour series specifically made for the Foundation.

Heliotropo 37 borrows its title from the street where Graciela Iturbide’s studio is located in Mexico City. Thus, a series of photographs by the artist Pablo López Luz that has documented this singular place of life and work where the historical negatives of Graciela Iturbide rub shoulders with works of Mexican popular art, plants and cacti, as well as large libraries whose shelves store the books of the photographers who inspired her.

Graciela Iturbide was published by Atelier EXB  in 2019 as part of the Des oiseaux(On birds) collection, which celebrates through the vision of different artists, their immense presence in a world where they are now vulnerable.

On the occasion of this publication, she gave to see birds that aroused both attraction and repulsion: their fragility but sometimes also their threatening power calling and seducing the reader. The book is enriched by an unpublished essay by ornithologist Guilhem Lesaffre inviting us to reflect on our relationship with the bird.

The titles in the collection include: Albarrán Cabrera, Leila Jeffreys, Rinko Kawauchi, Michael Kenna, Yoshinori Mizutani, Byung-Hun Min, Paolo Pellegrin, Bernard Plossu, Pentti Sammallahti, Terri Weifenbach and Paolo Pellegrin.
