Robert Capa

Icônes

A true immersion in the image factory of the great photographer, filmmaker and war reporter Robert Capa, this retrospective book, edited by specialist Michel Lefebvre, presents both iconic images and previously unpublished photographs from the Golda Darty private collection and the Magnum Photos archives. The book examines the singularity of Capa's approach: how were his images distributed and published, and what do they tell us about the photographer's life and the influence he had on modern photojournalism?

Organized chronologically and thematically, and introduced by short texts by Michel Lefebvre, the series presented in the book alternate between historical shots and archival documents. Six major chapters retrace and contextualize Capa's work: from the Spanish Civil War to the Sino-Japanese conflict, from Russia to Deauville's summer season, via the Second World War and the Normandy landings.

Icônes explores the artist's working methods and the clues found on the backs of his photographs. This rich documentary material (original prints, extracts from newspapers and books, etc.) sheds light on the creation and distribution of Capa's images.
