Bruno Boudjelal

A Franco-Algerian photographer and member of the VU’ Agency, Bruno Boudjelal lives and works between Paris and Africa. Born in Montreuil in 1961, he uses photography to constantly question his own identity and confront us with our own. In 1993, he set out to trace his paternal roots in Algeria – the starting point of an exploration that would last ten years – which led him to move from black and white to colour and to embrace the subjectivity of his perspective. Regularly featured in the press and the recipient of institutional grants and prestigious awards, including the 2015 Prix Nadar for his book *Algérie, clos comme on ferme un livre?*, his work has been acquired by French public collections and has been the subject of numerous exhibitions in France and around the world. Alongside his artistic practice, Bruno Boudjelal is engaged in a broader exploration and reflection on photography, leading socio-artistic initiatives in certain neighbourhoods, and overseeing professional training programmes and exhibitions. In 2017, he organised the exhibition ‘Ikbal / Arrivées: Towards a New Algerian Photography’, presented at the Museum of Modern Art in Algiers, the IMA: Cité internationale des arts in Paris, and the Friche Belle de Mai in Marseille, as part of the second Biennale of Contemporary Arab Photographers.
