Clément Cogitore

Clément Cogitore lives and works between Paris and Berlin. After studying at the École supérieure des arts décoratifs in Strasbourg and at Le Fresnoy-Studio national des arts contemporains, he has developed a practice at the intersection of contemporary art and film. Combining films, videos, installations, and photographs, his work questions the ways in which humans coexist with their images, often dealing with rituals, collective memory, the representation of the sacred, and the notion of the porousness of worlds.

Cogitore received the Grand Prix du Salon de Montrouge in 2011. In 2012, he was a resident at the French Academy in Rome - Villa Medici. His first feature film won the Prix de la Fondation Gan at the Cannes Film Festival’s Critics’ Week and was nominated for the César Award for Best First Film in 2015. That same year, he received the Le BAL/ADAGP Prize for Young Artists and, in 2016, the Sciences Po Prize for Contemporary Art and the 18th Fondation Pernod Ricard Prize for Contemporary Art. In 2018, he was awarded the Marcel Duchamp Prize. His adaptation of Jean-Philippe Rameau’s opera-ballet Les Indes galanteswas selected by the New York Times in its list of the ten best operas of 2019, nominated for best opera production of 2019 by Giornale della Musica, and won the Forum Opéra award for best production of 2019. In 2020, Oper! Awards presented him with the award for best director. In 2022, his second feature film, Goutte d’or, was selected for a Special Screening at the Critics’ Week at the Cannes Film Festival and won the Hildegarde Screenplay Award, the Best Director Award at LEFFEST in Lisbon, and the Best Actor Award at the Hainan Film Festival. In 2023, he was shortlisted to represent France at the Oscars.

His work is exhibited and presented in prestigious French and international institutions, biennials, and public and private collections. He is represented by Chantal Crousel Consulting, Paris, and the Elisabeth and Reinhard Hauff Gallery, Stuttgart.
