Born in 1968 in Kent, Ohio, Todd Hido is an American artist based in the San Francisco Bay Area.
He wanders endlessly, taking long road trips in search of images that relate to his own memories. Through his unique process of creating landscapes and his characteristic color palette, Todd Hido alludes to the quiet and mysterious side of suburban America—where uniform communities offer a stable facade—while hinting at the instability that often lurks behind the walls.
His photographs are included in numerous private and public collections, including the Getty, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Pier 24 Photography holds the archive of all his published work. His work was recently exhibited at the Rencontres d'Arles in 2025.
Todd Hido has also published more than a dozen books, including the award-winning monographs House Hunting (2001) and The End Sends Advance Warning (2023). He is also a collector of both photography books and vernacular images. Over the past thirty years, Todd Hido has assembled an extensive collection of more than 8,500 books. He lives and works in Oakland and teaches at the California College of Art in San Francisco.
