Nicholas Nixon (born in 1947, in Detroit) is an American artist known for his B&W portraits and large-format documentary photographs. He notably photographed the rural life in the South of the United States, Boston schoolchildren, ordinary men and women, but also those in retirement homes, the blind and even those with AIDS. His most famous boy of work is the one he started in 1975 photographing his wife and three sisters, one frame per year. This series, The Brown Sisters, shows both the stamina of the photographer but also the effect of time on family, Nixon’s favorite domain. This work has entered major museum collections, notably at MoMA in New York and at the Maison européenne de la photographie in Paris. In 1975, Nixon begins as well his Industrial Landscapes series which brought all of these man-altered cityscapes into view. Largely influenced by the work of Edward Weston and Walker Evans, who are the reason he began using large format cameras, Nixon retains that singular aesthetic of a large-scale photograph that places him as one of the great American photographers of our time. .
