Cyrus Cornut (born in 1977 in Paris) is an architect by training. His work is primarily focused on the city, its malleability, evolutions, history, omissions, and on the human behaviour that it induces. In 2006, his first work on Chinese cities was exhibited at the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie in Arles under the artistic direction of Raymond Depardon. He was a member of the Picturetank cooperative agency from 2007 until its closure in 2017. In 2010, with the France 14 group, he exhibited "Voyage en périphérie" [Journey on the Periphery], about the landscapes of mass housing in Île‑de‑France. Since 2011, his research has also examined the role of plants in the urban landscape, but also in rural settings. "Le Voyage d’Alberstein" [Alberstein’s Trip] grew out of this, a collaborative series that attempts to synthesise different questions about humanity, our natural, planned, or social environments and the time frame in which these evolve. He is currently developing a 4x5 medium-format work that allows him to look at urban evolutions in Asia and France from a long-term perspective, as well as a more plastic body of work combining drawing, engraving, and photography.
