Alain Willaume

Beyond any documentary conception, metaphor haunts the work of Alain Willaume. Consistently experimental in his approach to form, he develops a singular oeuvre attuned to the world that he explores and observes.

Photographer and member of the Tendance Floue collective since 2010, Alain Willaume (1956) is also an independent curator, artistic director, and professor (Haute école des arts du Rhin de Strasbourg from 2003 until 2014 and the École nationale supérieure d’art de Nancy since 2013). He was notably one of the organizers of the exhibition programme INDIA that he initiated at the Rencontres d’Arles 2007. In 2008 in India, he was also the artistic director of India Photo Now: A Year of Photography in India. His latest monograph, Bords du gouffre, was published and exhibited at the Rencontres d’Arles in 2003. He has won the Kodak Critic’s Prize in 1979, as well as first prize at the Sony World Photography Award 2011 category Portraiture-Fine Art. He lives and works in Paris.
