Jeff Wall, born in 1946 (Canada), is one of the leading players on the international contemporary art scene. Since the 1970s, he has chosen photography as a tool of representation of modern life. Generally printed in very large format, his works are compared to paintings. They are often mounted on lightboxes and presented in the shape of black and white or colour prints. Carefully composed, usually “acted out” by actors selected according to their likeness with a scene from real life, his images are always on the fringe –“almost documentary” in the photographer’s own words.
His work has been exhibited in museums worldwide, and more recently at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (2014), at the Padiglione d'arte Contemporanea in Milano (2013) and at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne (2012). Several survey shows have been dedicated to his work, notably at the MoMA New York, at the Art Institute of Chicago and at the MoMA San Francisco in 2007. Jeff Wall is represented by Marian Goodman Gallery. He lives and works in Vancouver.
