Chief curator of the exhibition Magicians of the Earth (Magiciens de la terre) in 1989, Jean-Hubert Martin is an independent curator after holding the position of national heritage curator. Former director of the Bern Kunsthalle; the French National Museum of Modern Art, Centre Pompidou; the Château d’Oiron; the French National Museum for African and Oceanic Art; the Museum Kunst Palast of Düsseldorf and FRAME France, he has curated numerous exhibitions including the 5th Lyon Biennial « Partage d’exotisme » in 2000, « Altäre – Lunst zum Niederknien » in Düsseldorf in 2001, « Africa Remix » in Düsseldorf in 2005, « Une image peut en cacher une autre » at the Grand Palais in 2009, « Dalí » at the Centre Pompidou in 2013 and « Le Théâtre du monde » at the Maison Rouge in 2013. A collection of his essays are gathered in the publication L’Art du large (Flammarion, 2012).
