Lothar Baumgarten


The German photographer, sculptor and contemporary artist, Lothar Baumgarten splits his time between Berlin and New York. He trained at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste at Karlsruhe, in 1968, then at the Staatliche Kunstakademie at Düsseldorf, from 1969 to 1971, where he notably studied under Joseph Beuys for one year. Lothar Baumgarten is known for his photographs and sculptures addressing environmental issues, mainly inspired by his stays among native populations of North and South America. He also transmits his anthropological research through films, photographs and essays. He is represented by the Thomas Zander gallery in Cologne, and the Marian Goodman gallery in New York and Paris.
