American photographer, Emmet Gowin (b. 1941), has been trained at RISD with Harry Callahan who became one of his mentors and greatest influences. He has been making memorable portraits of his family since the 1960's including iconic portraits of his wife Edith who has inspired most of his art. With great simplicity, his work falls within the tradition of great masters of the 20th century that he considers his mentors : Eugène Atget, Alfred Stieglitz, Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Harry Callahan, Frederick Sommer…and for whom the art work doesn’t correspond to the completion of a project but something closely related to life.
Emmet Gowin has taught photography from 1973 to 2009 at Princeton University inspiring in his turn a new generation of photographers. He lives and works in Newton, PA.
