How cars have shaped up our landscape, redefined man’s relationship to space and time, as well as influenced the vision of a large number of artists? The exhibition Autophoto, curated by Xavier Barral and Philippe Séclier, with Leanne Sacramone and Marie Perennes of the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, considers the extent of the relationship between photography and the automobile since their invention. Through close to 500 works from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day, more than 90 historical and contemporary photographers invite us to share their fascination for the automobile, or use it as a tool to capture the world around them. As we question nowadays the role of the automobile within our society, Autophoto seeks to offer a historical perspective, both critical and humorous, on this symbol of dream and freedom of the 20th century.

Published by Éditions Xavier Barral, a book accompanies the exhibition and features 600 iconic images by both historic and contemporary photographers. Quotes by the artists, a chronology of automobile design, as well as interviews and texts by specialists provide a deeper understanding of this vast topic through a variety of aesthetic, sociological and historical perspectives.
