The Maison de la Chine displays twenty-two photographs by Gao Bo on Tibet, coinciding with the exhibition Les Offrandes taking place simultaneously at the Maison européenne de la photographie. In the Tibet series, the photographer has reworked images from his trips to Tibet between 1985 and 1995, in homage to the Tibetan people. To this end, he invented a fictional language, "the language of the soul", which he traces with his own blood on each print just as a calligrapher.
The Éditions Xavier Barral have published for the occasion Tibet 1985-1995, Offrandes, a monograph gathering the full series of Gao Bo’s work on Tibet. By covering them with ink, paint and his own blood, the artist questions and reinvents his photographs. This gesture stresses the limits of language, and thereby tries to go beyond the uncommunicability of his experience in Tibet.
