Pierre et Gilles

French multidisciplinary artists that have always worked in duo, Pierre et Gilles associate photography with painting in a singular approach. Pierre, born in 1950 in La Roche-sur- Yon, is the man behind the camera and his partner, Gilles, born in 1953 in Le Havre, brings his unique attractive ornaments framing each portrait. Specialized in celebrity and fashion portraits, the duo has « created images that mix reality with daily life, dreams and imagination » declares Gilles. Their subject, always a person, is first photographed and staged within objects and clothes on different layers. In a second phase, the image is retouched and each detail, from the light to the composition, is subjected to a painted intervention. The result of their work is an artwork with both a unique and ambivalent status.

Their work has been exhibited in numerous exhibitions worldwide including the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris in 1996, the New Museum of New York in 2000 and the Jeu de Paume in Paris in 2007.

They live and work in Paris. They are represented by the Galerie Templon.
