Sally Mann

© R. Kim Rushing

Born in 1951 in Lexington, Virginia, Sally Mann has studied photography at the Praestegaard Film School. Renowned for her portraiture work and B&W landscapes of South in the United States, she has developed an intimate oeuvre in which gather senses of sensuality and loss. Her body of work Immediate Familyin which she unveils the life of her family has set off an important polemic and propelled her on the international artistic scene at the end of the 1980’s. Playing with contrasts both in her practice of B&W photography and in the approach of her subjects, bearing the ambivalent traces of innocence, violence, and decay, Sally Mann has developed a singular artistic universe. Her work is included in numerous institutions worldwide including the New York MoMA and the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art.
