Thabiso Sekgala


Thabiso Sekgala was born in 1981 in Soweto, South Africa. Sekgala started his photography training at the Market Photo Workshop in 2008 and completed both the Foundation and Intermediate courses in that same year. He has worked on various bodies of work, largely concerned with concepts of placidness and belonging. Sekgala’s various bodies of work have been exhibited in solo and group shows including Borders at Goetheonmain Gallery in Johannesburg in 2009, Considering Documentary at The Photo Workshop Gallery in 2010, Re-found in Drongen, Belgium in 2010, a solo show, Homeland, at The Photo Workshop Gallery in 2011 as well as two group shows at the Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg in 2011 and 2012.

Sekgala has been awarded a number of photography prizes including the CIT:Y career award in 2011. He was also awarded the Tierney Fellowship in 2010, which resulted in his solo show at The Photo Workshop gallery and work at the New York Photo Festival in 2011. Sekgala’s work has also featured in other festivals such as the Image Singulière Festival in Sète, France in 2009 and Shoe Shop in Johannesburg in 2012. Sekgala’s work is included in a number of private collections.
